Barasoain Church

Dubbed as the "cradle of democracy," Barasoian Church - located in the city of Malolos in Bulacan province just north of Manila - played an important role in the birth of the First Philippine Republic.

The church was built by the Augustinians in 1885, although an older structure, which was burned in a fire in 1880, was erected in 1630.

The congress was convened in the church in 1898 to draft the constitution of the first republic. The constitution, the first republican constitution in Asia, was promulgated a few months later, in January 22, 1899. The new government, the culmination of the revolution against Spain, was then inaugurated a day later, also in the church.
