There will be times when you just need to look back to a past you never experienced but molded the race that you belong to today. I’m talking about the Spanish colonial times in Manila when life was a struggle for our forefathers adjusting to a culture not familiar to them. Go through their pains as they experienced physical abuse as well as emotional struggles as they were forced to bow down to a higher authority that had no concern for their welfare but only for their own nation’s gains. The Filipno’s struggles and brainwashing into believing the Spaniards were a better race and accept their status as second class citizens in their own land. Those are some of the thoughts that entered my mind as I attended an informative walking tour organized by a good friend, Rence Chan. He enjoys sharing what he knows about Philippine history and organizes these monthly walking tours in Manila. Historical spots included in the tour include: Liwasang Bonifacio, Manila Post Office, Old Port Area, Maestranza walls, the Ayuntamiento Palace, and Marble Palace among others depending on the permits.
Why not spend quality time with the children this summer learning about the past and spending a scenic, refreshing day at Intramuros with the Filipinas Stamp Collectors’ Club in cooperation with Philpost, Museo ng Maynila , Intramuros Administration, National Press Club , Winners Foundation , Department of Education , and GSIS. The Tour is FREE every 3
rd Sunday of the month but registration is a must. Maximum number of participants is 50. The next tour is tentatively set on April 21 and deadline for registration is on April 17.
So enjoy an afternoon of fun , travel , nature tripping, unravelling stories , mysteries and ghost sightings behind some of the city’s most historical buildings, wilderness areas and sites with the family!
The objective of the free Guided Tours is to help re-build the Metropolitan theatre and other historical places which are neglected for the longest time as well as to serve as some sort of Bantay Architecture Heritage and promote the dying art of letter writing and stamp collecting among others. Although this is a Free Tour any donation to the club’s various out- reach projects are highly “WELCOME”. Photography is allowed with permit.
